Small Kitchen Projects for the DIY Mom
May 13th, 2009 by Ryan (Admin)

Every kitchen eventually starts to look old and worn, no matter how well you care for it.  However, most of us don’t have the money for a full, magazine style kitchen makeover, or the time to deal with having the kitchen torn apart for weeks.  If you’re a DIY mom, however, you can freshen up your kitchen on your own.

There are lots of projects around the kitchen that you don’t have to be a pro to take on and get done well.  You’ll save a lot more money by not hiring a contractor to get the job done, and you’ll end up with some great skills that will help you in the future.  Of course, without the right training, you can’t do everything – it’s best to stick to the simple jobs when you’re still learning.  Here are a few that can help you get the feel of a new kitchen without a full renovation.

Installing a Backsplash
A simple backsplash installation or replacement can do a whole lot to change the look of your kitchen, plus it’ll protect the wall behind your sink.  Ceramic tiles are relatively easy to install, though removing an old backsplash may take some elbow grease.  You’ll need to start with a smooth, clean wall for a good installation.  Make sure the wall is dry and sound enough to hold the weight of the tile you’re going to use, and if you have tiled counters, choose tiles that are the same size so you can line up grout lines.

Turn off all the power to outlets on that wall, then apply the adhesive recommended by the manufacturer.  Place tiles with care, since they can be difficult to reposition.  It can be a smart idea to lay out all your tile on a flat surface before you begin the actual tiling.  That way, you have an idea of what the finished backsplash will look like.

Adding Curtains
Making curtains can add color and brightness to your kitchen windows.  It can also be quite simple – many curtains are just a hemmed length of fabric with a pocket sewn in the top for a rod.  If even that level of sewing is more than you’re willing to take on, there are no sew options as well, such as iron on products like stitch witchery.

Remember that these are less durable than a sewn seam.  You can also simply hang or tie swags of fabric to a rod to create attractive curtains for relatively little cost.  Choose a fabric that’s not too dark, since most kitchens are meant to be bright, and be sure to stick with colors and patterns that go with the kitchen.  However, this project is one of the simplest ones out there.

Refinishing Cabinets
A new coat of paint or a different finish could do a lot for your cabinets, and this is a job you can do in stages.  That way, it won’t take over all of your free time.  One cabinet can be painted at a time – just make sure you have plenty of the right colored pain, so nothing will seem mismatched.  Remove cabinet doors and hardware, and paint the doors and frames separately.  Remember to tape off areas that shouldn’t get paint on them, too – don’t just rely on having a steady hand.  You’ll be surprised by how easy it can be.

Don’t want to clip coupons anymore? No Problem
May 12th, 2009 by Ryan (Admin)

Coupons have become big business in United States and Abroad, making up an almost 700 billion dollar a year industry, and over the last decade there have been some interesting changes in how we get our coupons. In 1908 C.W. post created the first coupon to promote a box of cereal, ever since that day, product manufacturers around the world have used coupons to help promote just about everything.

Most people do exactly what the manufacturers want, which are to use the coupon once, get familiarized with the product and then buy the product again at full price for a second and third time. This is where the savvy shopper can make a difference; by simply forgetting brand loyalty you can more easily take advantage of special product offers and coupons.

Since grocery coupons can really make a dent in your monthly supermarket bill, it is important to understand a little more about them. Traditionally, coupon clipping consists of getting your weekly coupon circular from inside your Sunday newspaper, scrolling from page to page to locate the coupons and finally cutting them out of the flyer with a pair of scissors.

Fortunately, the internet has made leaps and bounds in the grocery coupon arena. Today, you can print coupons off of your computer, search weekly store flyers online and order your groceries with the click of a mouse. Finding coupons online is easy, but finding the really good coupons requires a little bit of trial and error. Here are some tips and tricks to finding the best coupons online.

Printable Coupons – only just recently becoming a viable option, coupons.com now offers almost 100 different coupons at any give time. These coupons, which can be searched and printed from your home computer, are a great way to subsidize your coupon clipping. What most people don’t know is that the majority of all coupons only come from a handful of sites. Coupons.com is the main site, but the ones people often forget about are the manufacturer and retail store sites. Sites like Kellogs, Colgate, Betty Crocker and more have hundreds of coupons and promotional offers on their web sites. These coupons alone will not guarantee that you get huge savings, but they are a start.

Coupon Clipping Services – Selectcouponprogram.com will clip coupons for you, yes, that’s right, imagine no more clipping. It is a pretty simple system, sign up, choose the coupons you want from over 500 selections and get the coupons you ordered in the mail. This easy to use service has a much better variety of coupons then printable coupon sites. In addition, you never need to worry whether or not your store will accept them since they are accepted at any store that takes coupons.

Digital Coupons – The internet has finally come of age, and digital coupons are starting to sprout up. If you shop at a Kroger store or one owned by Kroger, you are in luck since they have a digital coupon program that allows you upload coupons directly to your store loyalty card. Unfortunately, digital coupon usage is very limited, but hopefully in the future we will see a more wide range of availability.

In case coupon clipping isn’t a fun pastime for you and your family, don’t despair, you now have more options then ever to get your favorite supermarket coupons. Happy Online Clipping!

$162 worth of Groceries for .42 cents

Tips and Tricks to save at the supermarket by the Coupon Queen

Last month I paid 42 cents for $162 worth of groceries at an ACME supermarket in Philadelphia. This shopping experience was one of my better performances; normally I save between 50-65% off of my bill when I shop for my family.

Today, grocery costs are a significant monthly expense, which is why saving at the supermarket has become so important. When most people think about supermarket savings, the first thing that comes to mind are grocery coupons. Grocery coupons are great, but in order to save 50% or more off of your grocery bill you will need to use every tool at your disposal. Here are some simple tricks and tips to help you save as much as possible at the supermarket.

1. Create a shopping list, this simple task can shave 20% or more off of your bill by helping you stick to your essential items. 2. Whenever possible, shop at stores that double coupons. This might seem like I am pointing out the obvious, but if you ask the average shopper if their store doubles, they don’t know.3. Know your prices, just because a product is on sale doesn’t mean it is good deal. If you frequently buy the same product(s), get familiarized with the products price range at different stores. When you see your favorite product at or near its lowest price, make a mental note and always try to buy extra at that price (especially if they are non-perishable items).4. Make sure you are signed up for store loyalty programs; you would be surprised how many people never get around to doing this.5. Get Supermarket Coupons Online – My favorite places are selectcouponprogram.com, coupons.com and manufacturers web sites.6. Avoid gourmet grocery stores for basic products like juices and dairy, these can sometimes cost double what your low cost supermarket charges. 7. Try to find a Target or Walmart that carries groceries, I always find great prices at these stores. Silk Soymilk was only $2.49 a gallon at Target, normally $4 at the local Gristedes.8. Don’t be afraid to switch stores or brands, most of the products are made by the same manufacturer anyway.9. Bring all of your coupons to the store each time you shop in case a product is on sale that wasn’t in the flyer.10. Keep track of the stores sales cycles, normally they run sales every few weeks or months on the same products.

By following these simple tips and tricks you will be surprised how much money you save. Remember, saving at the supermarket is easy when you know what to look for!

5 Projects Even a DIY Mom Shouldn’t Do
May 2nd, 2009 by Ryan (Admin)

If you’re a DIY mom, you’ve probably gotten used to the idea that you can fix a lot of the problems you encounter around the house without recourse to a professional.  However, there are some projects that no one who doesn’t have professional training and a lot of experience should get involved in.  Let’s take a look at the types of projects you’ll want to call a pro in for, and the reasons that no amateur should take them on.

Roofing

Installing a new roof on your home or repairing an old one is a dangerous proposition, especially if you’re thinking about doing it all by yourself.  Roofing can be tricky, and involves pretty significant heights.  There’s a reason professional roofers almost never work alone.  Falls from a roof can cause serious, lasting injuries.

On top of that, roofing requires a fairly large amount of experience and knowledge, from the standard asphalt roof to more complex slate shingle or standing seam steel roofs.  Get it wrong, and you’ve wasted a lot of materials and your roof may leak!  Of course, incorrect roofing may not show up in as obvious a fashion, either.  Trapped moisture under a badly installed roof could cause mold and rot that you won’t find for years.  When it comes to roofing, call a pro.

Complex Plumbing

Most of us can install a new drain on an existing sink, put in new faucets and handles, and do other minor plumbing jobs without much of a problem, provided we make sure we know what we’re doing.  However, there are some big plumbing jobs that are worth calling in a professional for.

If you’re thinking about installing a radiator, a hot tub, a new shower, or any other appliance or fixture that’s going to require rerouting of pipes or have a significant chance of leakage, think again.  Unless you’re a professional plumber yourself, you probably don’t have the skills and knowledge to deal with it.

Advanced Electrical Jobs

Another area where you should avoid dealing with the situation on your own is when you’re dealing with advanced wiring jobs.  Installing or moving an outlet, rewiring part of the house, or other more complex jobs should be left up to a certified electrician.  There are some personal dangers when dealing with these jobs that you don’t want to risk, plus, you could create a short that’ll cause problems in the future.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t repair existing outlets, install switches or dimmers, and deal with minor wiring, however.  Just make sure you know what you’re doing before you deal with electricity.

Natural Gas

If it involves gas, steer clear.  This is a good rule for anyone, mom or not.  Gas is tricky to work with and should be handled only by trained pros with the education for it.  Otherwise, you’re risking a leak, explosions, and even possible pet or human fatalities!  If you have a new stove, furnace, or other gas using appliance that needs installation, or a gas line repair, call a professional.
